Desi Jr. Plays Desi Sr.!
Filming Oscar Hijuelos' Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love, presented a problem. In the novel, the two Cuban brothers meet their hero, Desi Arnaz, who invites them to appear on an episode of "I Love Lucy" ("Cuban Pals"). Who would the studio get to play Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz? The "Lucy" problem was solved through clever editing, putting the film's stars (Armande Assante and Antonio Banderas) into a sitcom scene with Lucille Ball herself. And to play Desi Arnaz, they tapped Desi's own son, Desi Arnaz Jr. When Desi, Jr. walked onto the Hollywood sound stage to shoot his "I Love Lucy" scenes, he suddenly stopped short, and a chill went up his spine. "My God!" he shouted. "Do you realize where we are? This is the original sound stage where "I Love Lucy" was filmed!"
