| Postal Service Unveils the "I Love Lucy" Postage Stamp WASHINGTON I Love Lucy, one of the most popular television programs of all time, was honored with a new commemorative stamp, unveiled by the U.S. Postal Service on May 26, 1999. A 50 x 61 foot billboard of the stamps image has been elevated above New Yorks Times Square. The I Love Lucy stamp is one of 15 commemorative stamps saluting the 1950s as part of the Celebrate The Century stamp and education program. The stamps, issued May 26, 1999 in Springfield, Mass, join five sheets of 15 stamps commemorating the 1900s, 1910s, 1920s, 1930s and 1940s now available at post offices nationwide. The Celebrate The Century commemorative stamp and education program honors some of the most significant people, places, events and trends of each decade of the passing century. Lucie Arnaz andDesi Arnaz, Jr. had this to say: "We are pleased that our parents have been chosen by the American public to represent the 1950s in the USPS Celebrate The Century stamp program. We are sure our parents would be proud to know that they are still so well loved, and that the show they created together, I Love Lucy, continues to live in your hearts to this day." | |||||
| Lucy in the Media I Love Lucy: "Somebody Wrote That" HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA - Those classic routines on I Love Lucy may have looked spontaneous, but Lucille Ball knew that without her writers--Jess Oppenheimer,Bob Carroll, Jr. and Madelyn Pugh Davis, there would have been no show. "I love them dearly," she once said. "I appreciate them daily, I praise them hourly, and I thank God for them every night." Now the Writers Guild of America has launched an ad campaign to remind us of what Lucy knew: Sitcoms don't just "happen." The most recent ad, which graced the back cover of the May issue of Written By Magazine, fondly reminisces about Lucy and Ethel in the candy factory, and then concludes by pointing out that "Somebody wrote that." | |||||
