BEVERLY HILLS - Some of TV's favorite sitcom stars gathered at the Museum of Television & Radio on February 8, 2000, to take part in a live on-stage re-creation of My Favorite Husband - the radio show that made Lucille Ball a sitcom star. The L.A. Theatre Works production of "My Favorite Husband, the Radio Series That Inspired I Love Lucy" starred Marilu Henner (Taxi), Jeff Conaway (Taxi), Harold Gould (Rhoda), and Alley Mills (The Wonder Years). Produced by Gregg Oppenheimer, the show featured two hilarious episodes written by I Love Lucy scribes Jess Oppenheimer, Madelyn Pugh and Bob Carroll Jr.
The shows were performed live in the Museum's John H. Mitchell Theatre, old time radio style - just as "My Favorite Husband" was produced half a century ago. The actors stood at microphones, scripts in hand, while an on-stage sound effects artist produced live audio effects such as a telephone dialing, an envelope being ripped open, and even a tray of shrimp cocktails being sent flying!
The two re-created episodes were "Liz Changes Her Mind" (originally broadcast June 24, 1949) and "Trying to Marry Off Peggy Martin" (originally broadcast December 2, 1950). Both of these radio episodes were later adapted for television on "I Love Lucy" (as "Lucy Changes Her Mind" and "Lucy is Matchmaker" ). Theatre Works' acclaimed arts education and outreach programs "Arts and Children" and "Alive & Aloud."
