Lucille Ball Honored (Again) on U.S. Postage Stamp

BURBANK, Calif. - July 21, 2000 -- Lucille Ball will be the seventh honoree on a commemorative postage stamp in the "Legends of Hollywood" series, the U.S. Postal Service announced today.

The Lucille Ball stamp, scheduled to be issued next year, was unveiled today at the Loving Lucy 2000 Convention in Burbank, California.

"As one of America's most admired, beloved, and talented actresses of the twentieth century, Lucille Ball's countless contributions to the entertainment industry -- both as an entertainer and businesswoman -- endear her in the memories of millions whose lives she touched," said Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee member and Oscar-winning actor Karl Malden.

Malden was joined at the unveiling ceremony by Lucille Ball's cousin Cleo Smith, who was reared as Lucy’s sister when they grew up in Jamestown, NY."What a wonderful honor for Lucy!" said Smith. "I know she would be thrilled and very grateful, as are all of us in the Ball-Arnaz-Morton families."

Previous honorees in the "Legends of Hollywood" commemorative stamp sereis are Marilyn Monroe (1995), James Dean (1996), Humphrey Bogart (1997), Alfred Hitchcock (1998), James Cagney (1999) and Edward G. Robinson (2000).

This will be the second time within two years that Lucille Ball will appear on U.S. postage -- a record for a private citizen, according to Postal Service personnel. In 1999, an "I Love Lucy" stamp (pictured at left) was issued as part of the "Celebrate The Century" stamp series, featuring a black-and-white photograph of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz.
