Lucille Ball's performance in this I Love Lucy episode ("The Great Train Robbery") brought her a letter from FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover (click here or on the letter to enlarge it).
J. Edgar Hoover's Fan Letter to Lucy
Did the FBI Love Lucy?

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Lucille Ball had her own dossier at the Federal Bureau of Investigation. She was even briefly suspected of being a Communist (as a result of having registered as one in 1936 to humor her eccentric grandpa). But what were FBI director J. Edgar Hoover's true personal feelings about Lucy? Now it can be told: The nation's top G-man was an unabashed Lucy fan.

LUCYlibrary has obtained a fan letter written to Lucy by Hoover himself. "I know that you are no doubt burdened by a great deal of fan mail," he wrote to Lucy after viewing "The Great Train Robbery" episode of I Love Lucy, "but I did want to add at least one more letter."

"Last Monday evening I had occasion to view your program," Hoover continued, "as I generally do on Monday evenings, and I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed the program. You and Desi and the rest of the cast were really terrific."
Why was Hoover so taken with this particular episode? That mystery doesn't take the Bureau's detectives to solve. "I got quite a kick out of your reference to the FBI and myself," Hoover's letter explained, "and I don't believe that I ever laughed as much at any TV program as I did at yours on Monday evening."
