| | | | Harold Gould, who starred as "Mr. Atterbury" (forerunner of "Fred Mertz") in the L.A. Theatre Works production of My Favorite Husband - The Sitcom That Inspired I Love Lucy, is probably best known to classic TV fans for his portrayal of Rhoda's father, "Martin Morgenstern" and as "Miles Webber" on Golden Girls. Known for his dapper looks and genteel demeanor, this comedic actor was born in Schenectady, New York, on December 10, 1923. After studying at the State University of New York at Albany, Gould earned a Ph.D. in theater from Cornell University, then taught drama and speech at Randolph Macon Women's College and at the University of California. After ten years of teaching drama, Gould decided to become an actor himself. He made his professional debut in 1960, and appeared in more than 300 TV shows over thenext four decades. His work has earned him five Emmy Award nominations, including for his co-starring role with Katharine Hepburn in Mrs. Delafield Wants to Marry. Gould's Broadway credits include Neil Simon's Fools, Jules Fieffer's Grown Ups, Tom Stoppard's Artist Descending a Staircase, and Richard Baer's Mixed Emotions. He has also appeared in more than twenty-five feature films, including Inside Daisy CloverThe Arrangement,The Sting, Love and Death, Silent Movie, Seems Like Old Times, Patch Adams, and Stuart Little.
